Chords

With long, sharp knives
they took his mother’s voice.

Now on sterile sheets
she lies silent,
waiting for him.

Lips that kissed where it hurt
and whispered to a sleeping boy
sit tight with pain and
whisper no more.

Unsounded words
underscore one-voiced conversations

(son don’t cry)
(mother don’t die)
